Volunteering Guidelines
To decide if a volunteering activity qualifies for CSA CE credit, ask yourself three
questions:
- Is the volunteer activity or task being performed through a senior-service organization or for a senior cause? (See examples below.)
- Is the activity performed without receiving monetary compensation?
- Does the activity support seniors or put me in direct contact with one or more seniors
who are receiving help?
A 'yes' answer to all three questions usually means the activity will qualify for
CSA CE credit.
Examples of activities that qualify for CSA CE credit:
- Working as a volunteer with state health insurance counseling and assistance programs
(known as SHIPS programs) – for example, Idaho's Senior Health Insurance Benefits
Advisors (ISHIBA)
- Providing transportation, "meals on wheels", home repair, reading to the blind and
other services offered through senior centers, assisted living facilities or nursing
homes*
- Performing pro bono work; participating in certain AARP programs such as Driver
Safety, Grief and Loss, and Tax-Aide
- Performing hospice work
Participating in a respite program for caregivers (inquire at senior centers for
these programs)*
* TIP:
To find senior centers in your area, do a keyword search on the Internet through
www.google.com, www.yahoo.com or other search engine. Use keywords such
as senior, center, volunteer and the name of your city and/or state.
