Working with Seniors: Health, Financial, and Social Issues

Chapter 12: Cognitive Aging

You learn in this chapter that most seniors live full, productive lives until well into their 70s. And that most of seniors’ mental functioning in later years remains fully intact, with only some normal and minimal slowing and brain deterioration. Only a small percentage of seniors develop Alzheimer’s or other dementia.

You also learn about the types of dementia commonly found among seniors, as well as the symptoms, causes and treatments, including specifics about Alzheimer’s, the effects on caregivers, and how you should best communicate with persons who suffer from dementia.
